What's on site, how it's classified, and where the SDS is

A WHMIS register has to answer three questions at once: what hazardous products are on this site, how are they classified and stored, and how does a worker get to the safety data sheet. CheckOHS keeps all three per location, with review dates so the register does not silently go stale.

What it does

Product identity

Chemical or product name, manufacturer, and the supplier if it differs from the manufacturer. Your own company stock number and a barcode — scanned or typed as a UPC or EAN — tie the register entry to what is physically on the shelf.

CAS number and hazard classification

The CAS registry number is recorded from SDS section 1 or 3, and the hazard classification from SDS section 2, with all applicable hazard classes and categories. The fields say where on the SDS the value comes from, so the person entering it is not guessing.

Quantity, container and storage location

Quantity, container type and storage area are held per location, so the register answers what is on this site rather than what the organization owns in aggregate.

How workers reach the SDS

The register records how workers can actually access the safety data sheet, and any combination of methods can be used — the point being that a register nobody can get an SDS from does not discharge the obligation.

Review dates that surface

Each product carries a last review date, and products that have never been reviewed are flagged as such rather than blending in with reviewed ones.

Import an inventory you already have

Existing inventories import from CSV, up to 500 rows per upload. Your file does not need to match a prescribed format: upload it with whatever headers it has, and map the columns to fields afterwards. A template is available if you would rather start from one.

Common questions

Can we import a hazardous product inventory we already maintain?
Yes. Upload a CSV of up to 500 rows per file with whatever column headers it already has, then map those columns to the register's fields after uploading. CheckOHS guesses the mapping from your headers and lets you correct it. A downloadable template is available if you prefer.
Is the register kept per site or per organization?
Per location. Quantity, container type and storage area are recorded against a location, so the register answers what is present at a given site — which is what an inspector visiting that site is asking.
How does CheckOHS track safety data sheets?
Each product records how workers can access its SDS, and any combination of access methods can be used. Products also carry a last review date, and those never reviewed are flagged.
Where do the CAS number and hazard classification come from?
From the safety data sheet itself — the CAS registry number from section 1 or 3, and the hazard classification, including all applicable classes and categories, from section 2. The form names the source section for each.
